Banana and Avocado Shake
Nothing about this concoction meets my goals of eating locally and sustainably, but I’ve given myself a free pass. For one thing, I HATE wasting food, no matter how far it traveled, and these were placed in my fruit basket by a worried relative. Also, I LOVE avocadoes. If I were ever to do the true locavore thing, I could live without a lot of foods (bananas included), but avocadoes would be painful to give up. The minimal chewing involved in my usual method of eating avocado - sprinkle with salt, scoop from skin, put in mouth - was too much for me. So a shake it was.
My aunt, who delivered many fruits and vegetables to my house over the weekend, suggested this shake and says it’s one of her favorites. I was skeptical, but with some guidance from RecipeZaar, made myself a pretty tasty and filling lunch. My version, very close to their recipe: blend an avocado, a banana, some Greek yogurt, and some plain rice milk. Use more or less rice or soy or dairy milk, your choice, depending on how thin or thick you like your shakes.
I also added a bit of Spiru-Tein because, well, there just isn’t much protein in any of those other ingredients, but went light on the serving because I didn’t want the vanilla flavor overpowering the avocado (which was already a bit overpowered by the banana).
