This morning I estimated that, under normal circumstances, I crave a fruit smoothie roughly once every six months. At this rate, once this ordeal is over, I might manage to put off having another smoothie for a solid decade. Thankfully there are ways to make them taste nothing like the chain store variety. Inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow (did I really just say that? It’s not what it sounds like.) Inspired by a recipe written by Gwyneth Paltrow’s doctor — thanks for the tip, Kirsten — it turns out blueberries and almonds make a great combo. As I finished my iced coffee, I tossed any notion of the detox cleanse intended in the original recipe, and used both real yogurt and actual almonds (not almond milk) as a way to sneak in protein.
Blend thoroughly until blueberry skins and almonds are completely dissolved into the smoothie:
- 1 banana
- 1/4 cup wild blueberries
- 1/2 cup whole milk organic yogurt
- 1 cup no pulp orange juice with calcium
- small handful of almonds
